Requesting Summer or Semester Missionaries For Your Church
Churches, Pastors, Leaders:
Requesting Summer Missionaries
- If you are interested in requesting NAMB summer missionaries for 2012, and wish to have your request promoted by campus ministries and the North American Mission Board, you must fill out the application and have it into Mel Cruikshank's office by Monday August 1, 2011.
- This will assure that NAMB promotes and advertises your request to State conventions and on their website.
- Later requests may still be made (until Feb. 28, 2012) but they will not receive any where near the promotion as those received by August 1.
Requesting Semester Missionaries
- Semester Missionaries can be requested at any time.
- The same form is used to request either summer or semester missionaries.
- Semester missionaries normally serve Sept-Dec, Jan-April and/or May-August.
- Semester missionaries can renew their term of service for up to 5 semesters.
- It normally takes 6 weeks to process a semester missions request but if the missionary does not get references or police checks into NAMB right away this can delay the application for weeks. So make your request well ahead of time.

Please note there are significant changes this year to the application form. Please read the instructions carefully. Here are some suggestions you should consider:
1. Dates of Service for summer missions.
- There are more students available for a 31day to 5 week project than for a longer commitment.
- NAMB will only provide transportation funding for missionaries serving 31days or longer, so you will have more students consider your project if it is at least 31days in length
- Many students (especially Americans) have to be back to their universities by the middle of August. So, if you put your ending date at August 20th, the vast majority of students will just pass your request by and not even consider it. I suggest you set the ending date no later than August 2nd or 3rd.
2. Provision for Student Missionaries
If you request and receive a summer or semester missionary, you are responsible to provide :
- Food & housing/utilities for each missionary
- Operation/program budget
- Transportation on the field for each missionary
- Supervision, orientation, & debriefing
If you cannot cover the above expenses, then in your application request, you must list the dollar amount that the student must bring with them to cover those expenses.
Note: the summer and semester missionaries are not only giving of their time to minister but are also giving up months of work and thousands of dollars of potential earnings. To ask for significantly more financial committment may cause many potential missionaries to be unable to consider your request.
3. Ministry Description and Purpose
- This is the KEY to students responding.
- As they read over hundreds of requests sent in from churches across North America, this is what will catch their attention.
- Make your description creative and interesting.
- Write your ministry discription in such a way that the student will say, “wow, that church is making a difference in the world and I want to give my summer to help them"!
